Tarot Card Meanings:
Fours

What are the Fours in Tarot?

The Fours are the fourth cards of each suit in the Minor Arcana. There are four of them in total (one for each suit), and they all share one core theme: stability.

Where the Threes showed energy taking shape and gaining momentum, the Fours bring that movement to a pause. Something has been established, and now there is a moment of stillness. That stillness can feel like a welcome rest, a hard-won foundation, a comfortable plateau, or a place where things have become a little too fixed for their own good — depending entirely on the suit and the context of the tarot reading.

What the Fours have in common is a quality of consolidation. The energy isn’t moving forward yet. It’s settling.

The Four of Cups represents a period of introspection and withdrawal, where dissatisfaction or apathy has turned the focus inward. It often appears when something new is available but is going unnoticed, because attention is too fixed on what already exists or what feels lacking.

The Four of Swords signals a necessary pause for rest and recovery, most often after a period of stress, conflict, or mental strain. It often appears as a reminder that stepping back is not the same as giving up, and that stillness and rest is sometimes the most productive thing available.

The Four of Wands signals a moment of genuine celebration and communal joy, marking the achievement of a milestone. It often appears when a foundation has been laid and the people involved deserve to acknowledge how far things have come before moving forward.

The Four of Pentacles represents a tight grip on material security, often rooted in a fear of loss. It often appears when the instinct to protect what you’ve already built has tipped into rigidity, and the cost of holding on is beginning to outweigh the comfort it provides.
