Tarot Card Meanings:
Court Cards

What are Tarot Court Cards?

Tarot court cards are notorious for being some of the trickiest cards to interpret in a reading, and for good reason: they’re incredibly versatile. They can represent actual people in your life (or yourself!), but they can also signify personality traits, energies, or archetypes that are relevant to your situation. The context of the reading, combined with your own intuition, will always be your best guide when a court card shows up in a spread.

The Kings

The Kings are the most mature and fully realized figures in the Court. They represent mastery, authority, and leadership; specifically, the outward, active expression of their suit’s energy. A King doesn’t just understand their domain; they have worked hard to command it and create lasting results from it.
In a tarot reading, a King can represent a person in a position of competence, authority, or influence. It can also be a call for you to step into your own leadership and take charge of your situation.

King of Cups

The King of Cups leads with calm, compassionate authority, having mastered navigating his emotions without being swept away by them. He can nurture and hold space for others while keeping a clear head.

King of Swords

The King of Swords is the picture of intellectual authority — decisive, rational, and unwaveringly honest. He cuts through confusion to get to the truth, guiding others with clarity and strategic thinking.

King of Wands

The King of Wands is a confident and visionary leader who inspires others through his passion, boldness, and dynamic energy. He knows where he’s headed, and people naturally want to follow him there.

King of Pentacles

The King of Pentacles has built lasting wealth and stability through discipline and hard work. Dependable and generous, he uses his mastery of the material world to create security for those he cares about.

The Queens

The Queens are equally as powerful as the Kings, but where Kings tend to express their suit’s energy through outward action and command, Queens embody it from the inside out. They are deeply connected to the core essence of their suit, expressing it with intuition, depth, and a quiet but undeniable strength.
In a tarot reading, a Queen can represent a person of influence who leads through inner power and wisdom, or she can be an invitation to tap into that same depth and self-assurance within yourself.

Queen of Cups

The Queen of Cups is deeply in touch with her emotions and the feelings of everyone around her, with a natural gift for empathy and nurturing. She leads with intuition and inner wisdom, making her the kind of compassionate, perceptive presence others turn to for guidance and support.

Queen of Swords

The Queen of Swords combines sharp intellect with clear, honest communication. She sees through confusion and calls things as they are. She values independence and truth, making her a fair and formidable figure who navigates challenges with logic and integrity.

Queen of Wands

The Queen of Wands radiates confidence, warmth, and charisma. She is vibrant and self-assured, and people are drawn to her energy naturally. She is a bold and independent leader who pursues her passions with great enthusiasm and creativity, and isn’t afraid to take up space.

Queen of Pentacles

The Queen of Pentacles creates warmth, comfort, and abundance wherever she is, bringing a deeply nurturing and practical energy to everything she touches. She is grounded and resourceful, equally skilled at managing practical affairs and caring for the people and things in her world.

The Knights

The Knights are the action-takers of the Court; driven, focused, and always on the move. They represent the active pursuit and expression of their suit’s energy, and they bring an intensity to everything they do. That single-mindedness is often their greatest strength, but it can also be their biggest blind spot.
In a tarot reading, a Knight can represent someone in a particular phase of drive or ambition, or it can signal that the energy of the suit is about to start moving (or is already picking up speed) in your situation.

Knight of Cups

The Knight of Cups is a romantic at heart, guided by emotion, intuition, and the pursuit of something meaningful or beautiful. He is creative and charming, though his idealism can sometimes carry him further than his follow-through can keep up.

Knight of Swords

The Knight of Swords moves with swift, determined energy, charging toward his goals with sharp focus and a clear sense of purpose. He is brilliant and driven, but his greatest challenge is learning to slow down enough to consider the impact of his actions on others.

Knight of Wands

The Knight of Wands charges forward with boundless enthusiasm and a bold, adventurous spirit, driven by passion and a hunger for new experiences. He doesn’t always stop to plan before he leaps, and sometimes, that’s exactly the energy that’s needed.

Knight of Pentacles

The Knight of Pentacles is the most methodical and patient of the Knights, taking a diligent, step-by-step approach to everything he does. He may not be fast, but he is reliable, and his careful, persistent effort almost always leads to solid, tangible results.

The Pages

The Pages are the youngest, most inexperienced figures in the Court. They represent new beginnings, curiosity, and the early stages of exploring their suit’s energy. There is an openness and freshness to Pages that the other Court cards can sometimes lose along the way.
In a tarot reading, a Page can represent a young or young-at-heart person, a message or news on the way, or simply the invitation to approach something with a beginner’s mind  with genuine curiosity and no assumptions.

Page of Cups

The Page of Cups is a tender and imaginative soul, open to new emotional and creative experiences and still learning the language of their feelings. Their presence often signals unexpected inspiration, a message of love, or the early stirrings of something meaningful.

Page of Swords

The Page of Swords is alert, curious, and ready to take on new intellectual challenges with a sharp and eager mind. He is a quick thinker who is hungry to learn and communicate, though he is still developing the wisdom to know when to pause before he speaks.

Page of Wands

The Page of Wands arrives with a burst of enthusiasm and creative energy, eager to explore new ideas and exciting possibilities. He is adventurous and optimistic, full of vibrant potential that is just beginning to find its direction and take shape in the world.

Page of Pentacles

The Page of Pentacles approaches learning and new ventures with focus, patience, and a genuine desire to build something real and lasting. He is grounded and ambitious, taking his first practical steps with diligence and a careful eye toward future growth.
