Tarot Card Meanings:
Eights

What are the Eights in Tarot?

The Eights are the eighth cards of each suit in the Minor Arcana. There are four of them in total (one for each suit), and they all share one core theme: movement.

Where the Sevens introduced tension and demanded a response, the Eights show what happens when that response is finally in motion. Something is shifting, accelerating, breaking free, or being built with renewed focus. The energy here is active and purposeful, but not all of it moves in the same direction; depending on the suit, that movement can feel like liberation, momentum, escape, or deliberate effort.

What the Eights have in common is that staying still is no longer really an option. Things are in motion, and the question now is where that motion is taking you.

The Eight of Cups represents the decision to walk away from something that no longer fulfills you to find something more meaningful. It often appears when a situation has run its course, and the best thing to do is leave it behind.

The Eight of Swords represents a state of self-imposed limitation, where fear and doubt create the feeling of being trapped. It often appears when the perceived barriers or limits are more powerful in the mind than they are in reality.

The Eight of Wands signals swift movement and progress, where things are unfolding quickly. It often appears when the pace of events is picking up, and best thing to do is stay focused and keep up with what’s already in motion.

The Eight of Pentacles represents focused, dedicated effort toward developing a skill or craft. It often appears when the work itself is the point, and steady commitment to doing it well is what will produce results worth being proud of.
