Tarot Card Meanings:
The Devil

What is "The Devil" in Tarot?

The Devil is card number fifteen in the Major Arcana. It often elicits strong reactions due to its ominous name and imagery. Despite its foreboding appearance, this card carries nuanced symbolism that goes beyond a simple representation of evil. It represents bondage, materialism, and the darker aspects of human nature. This card signifies addiction, temptation, and being trapped by unhealthy desires or behaviors.

What are the key symbols in "The Devil" tarot card?

  • Horned devil figure: Symbolizes temptation, control, and base instincts.
  • Chains around figures: Represent bondage, restriction, and a sense of entrapment, often self-imposed.
  • Inverted pentagram on the devil’s forehead: Indicates an emphasis on materialism, ego, and earthly desires.
  • Figures with loose chains: Suggest the possibility of escape from limitations or unhealthy attachments.
  • Dark background: Reflects ignorance, hidden fears, and the shadow self.

These symbols are based on the Rider-Waite Smith tarot. Symbols may differ in other decks!

El Tarocchi Insight

The Devil is actually WITHIN you, not an external force.

One of the first big lessons I learned in 20+ years of tarot reading is that the “scary” cards are often misrepresented in popular media. For The Devil, people often think it means the literal, biblical Devil; a fiend that ensnares your heart with temptations and evil. Obviously, that’s never really the case.

I find The Devil most often appears in the context of patterns and attachments that tarot clients already know aren’t good for them; a relationship they can’t seem to leave, a bad habit that keeps resurfacing… basically any situation they feel “stuck” in despite technically being free to walk away. The loose chains around the figures in the card are the most telling detail. The exit is there. What keeps clients bound is usually a mix of comfort, fear, and familiarity. And sometimes, recognizing that is the hardest part.
