In the beginning, there was the Fool; and the Major Arcana plays out the rest of his tale. “The Fool’s Journey” is a fascinating and important concept for both beginners and tarot pros alike. Come along with me as I revisit this journey through 22 cards from 22 different decks.
The Tower: And It All Comes Tumbling Down, Tumbling Down, Tumbling Down
Imprisoned within a cage of his own making, the Fool can only free himself through the sudden change and release signified by the Tower. As the existing structure collapses, the Fool is also plummets — but it is through the pain of this fall that he starts to understand life’s most important lessons.
⠀
The Tower is one of the most intimidating and ominous cards in the tarot. In the NewWave Tarot by M. Miro and A. Mokuseioh, the Tower is a dark, cold-looking structure in the middle of a mountainous terrain. The thunderbolt illuminates the darkest part of the sky, shattering the perfectly polished structure and scattering debris. The lack of human figures in this interpretation of the Tower makes it less intimidating, but it does make me reflect on how sudden, abrupt change is often necessary to break down a solid structure that may no longer be serving us well, or has grown into something dark and oppressive.
