AI is everywhere these days, and tarot is no exception. There are now dozens of AI tarot tools available online, and they’re getting a lot of attention, especially among people who are new to tarot or just casually curious about it. If you’ve stumbled across one of these tools and are wondering whether they’re worth your time (and trust), this post is for you.
Listen: I’m NOT going to tell you that tarot AI tools are evil or that you’re doing something wrong by trying one out. But I am going to be honest with you about what they can and can’t do. There’s a big difference between a convenient tool and a trusted advisor, and AI tarot is firmly the former.

There’s a big difference between a convenient tool and a trusted advisor, and tarot AI is firmly the former.
What makes AI tarot reading so appealing?
Yeah, I see the appeal: tarot AI tools (or even LLM tools like ChatGPT and Gemini) are usually free, available at any hour of the day or night, and you don’t have to be vulnerable in front of another person to use them. For someone who is brand new to tarot and just wants to poke around, or for someone who woke up at 2 a.m. spiraling about a decision and wants something, that’s a genuinely understandable appeal.

What can tarot AI do reasonably well?
Here’s where I’ll give credit where it’s due: tarot AI tools are decent at delivering card definitions and keywords. If you pull the Tower and the AI tells you it represents sudden upheaval, disruption, and the collapse of something built on shaky foundations — that’s pretty accurate. It’s pulling from the same pool of established tarot meanings that any beginner book would give you.
In that sense, AI tarot functions a lot like a searchable, interactive reference guide. It can walk you through basic spread structures, explain what each position in a Celtic Cross means, and give you a rundown of a card’s traditional symbolism. For someone who is in the early stages of learning the cards, there’s some value in that.
But honestly? That’s really where it ends.
What tarot AI CAN’T do well
Here’s the thing about tarot: the cards don’t mean anything in a vacuum. Their meaning is always shaped by the person asking the question, the context of their situation, and the dynamic energy of a real reading.
A good tarot reader doesn’t just recite definitions — they interpret. They empathize and synthesize. They pick up on unexpected, human things that aren’t scripted. AI cannot do any of that.
A good tarot reader doesn’t just recite definitions — they interpret. They empathize and synthesize. They pick up on unexpected, human things that aren’t scripted. AI cannot do any of that.
AI can’t notice the hesitation in how you worded your question, or the fact that you keep circling back to the same card no matter how many times you reshuffle. It can’t sense that the Knight of Wands isn’t talking about a new opportunity this time; it’s talking about you, and the reckless way you’ve been moving through this situation.
A truly insightful tarot reading requires a real human being: someone with genuine intuition, lived experience, and actual care for the person they’re reading for.
You can get technically correct card definitions from MANY sources, which now include tarot AI tools. What makes a reading meaningful is when there’s a real, thinking, feeling human being bringing in empathy, experience, intuition, and innately human understanding to contextualize the tarot reading specifically for you.

What a good, human tarot reading actually involves
When you get a reading from a human tarot reader (whether in person, online, or any other format/method), you’re not just getting a card definition drawn from a large database of information. You’re getting someone who is bringing their intuition, their years of experience, and their genuine empathy for you and your situation into the reading.
A human tarot reader brings genuine discernment to your spread. They consider the full picture of the tarot reading; not just individual card meanings, but how the cards interact with each other and with the specific situation you’ve brought to the table. They notice things that an AI cannot catch because it doesn’t have any lived human experience. And human tarot readers have the wisdom and skill to communicate what they see in a way that you can actually receive.
What to do instead of relying on tarot AI
If you’re curious about tarot and want to learn, invest in real resources; books written by experienced practitioners, courses taught by actual human beings who have spent years with the cards. There are so many excellent ones out there. I also have some recommendations right here on my website, as well as my Bookshop storefront:
- El Tarocchi Lineage & References
- Reference Recos for Beginners
- El Tarocchi on Bookshop.org: Books About Tarot
Online courses made by human tarot teachers are also great for learning. You can find a few in my Lineage & References section, but if you’re Pinay like me, you may also want to consider checking out this list of tarot courses in the Philippines.
I genuinely believe that overreliance on AI tools of any kind doesn’t lead to true learning or growth.
And if you want a reading, do try to book one with a human reader. It’s okay to give AI tarot readings a try; I would never judge you for it, honestly. But I genuinely believe that overreliance on AI tools of any kind doesn’t lead to true learning or growth. I’m sure we’re all very, very tired of AI slop now, and are keenly aware of the brainrot that comes with relying too heavily on AI instead of our own wisdom and the wisdom we can pick up from other human beings.
So yeah. Step back from the tarot AI tools, touch some grass, and maybe consider seeking out a human for your next tarot reading.
