“Is tarot reading real?”
It’s one of the first questions I get from people who are curious about tarot but haven’t quite taken the plunge yet. And honestly? I think it’s a great question to ask, because the answer depends entirely on what you mean by “real.”
If you’re asking: “Can a tarot reader tell me exactly who I’m going to marry, when I’ll get rich, or what’s going to happen to me next Tuesday?”, then no, that’s not the reality of what tarot is.
But if you’re asking: “Can tarot actually help me gain clarity, understand myself better, and figure out what to do next?” then absolutely, yes. Tarot reading is very real, and it works.
Let me explain!

The Biggest Misconception: Tarot as Purely Panghuhula (Fortune-Telling)
In the Philippines, tarot is often lumped in with panghuhula — fortune-telling, or literally, “guessing” the future. Pop culture doesn’t help: tarot readers are shown as mysterious crystal-ball-gazers revealing some fixed, unavoidable fate. That image is more fantasy than reality.
The word hula literally means “guess.” Tarot is not about guessing. It’s not about revealing a locked-in future; it’s about illuminating the present so you can make better choices going forward. As I covered in “Six Common Myths about Tarot in the Philippines,” a reading is really just a snapshot of what might happen if things continue on their current path. Nothing is set in stone, and you always have the power to change direction.
So What Is Tarot Reading, Really?
Tarot is a deck of 78 cards filled with rich symbolic imagery. When you sit with a skilled reader, those cards become a mirror. They reflect things you already know on some level but haven’t been able to fully see or articulate. These include the fears you’ve been avoiding, the patterns you keep repeating, and the options in front of you that you haven’t fully considered.
Tarot reading is real because the human insights it generates are real.
Tarot reading is real because the human insights it generates are real. The clarity you feel after a good reading? Real. The decision you’re able to make with more confidence after? Real. The relief of finally feeling seen and understood in a situation that’s been confusing you? Very, very real.
What Tarot Reading Is Not
Let me be direct about a few things, because I think it matters:
Tarot reading is not a replacement for professional advice.
It’s not therapy, medical advice, or legal counsel. A good tarot reader will always encourage you to seek out qualified professionals for serious issues. If they don’t, that’s a red flag.
Tarot reading is not about dependency.
If a reader is trying to make you come back every week to “check” on your situation, or telling you that you need multiple sessions to “lift a curse” or fix your luck, walk away. Tarot should leave you feeling empowered and capable of making your own decisions, not more anxious and dependent on someone else.
Tarot reading is not infallible.
Cards are interpreted by human beings, and humans bring their own biases, intuitions, and blind spots to a reading. A good reader is humble about this. The best readings are collaborative; the reader brings skill and insight, and the client brings their own knowledge of their life and situation.

What a Good Tarot Reading Can Do For You
After two decades of tarot reading for paid clients as well as for friends and fam, here’s what I’ve seen tarot genuinely deliver:
- Clarity on a confusing situation; literally laying all your cards on the table to see every moving piece at once
- Validation of feelings or instincts you’ve been second-guessing
- Permission to acknowledge what you already know but haven’t let yourself fully accept
- A fresh perspective on a problem you’ve been too close to see clearly
- A framework for decision-making when you’re at a crossroads and can’t figure out which way to go
- Emotional release; sometimes just naming what you’re feeling through a card’s imagery is enough to move through it
These aren’t small things. These are the kinds of shifts that can genuinely change the trajectory of a person’s life.
So, Is Tarot Reading Real?
Absolutely! But, again, let me be clear about what that means.
Tarot is not a cheat code for life. It won’t tell you winning lottery numbers or give you a script for exactly how your life will unfold.
What it will do — when practiced with skill, integrity, and care — is help you see yourself and your situation more clearly. It will help you access wisdom you already carry but haven’t been able to reach. It will help you make better decisions, understand your emotions, and move through life with more intention.
All of that is very real. And probably way more valuable than you ever expected.
